Ignorance is a virtue according to the top brass at Grace University in Nebraska.
Danielle Powell, mere months from attaining her bachelor’s degree, was outed to school officials by her “spiritual adviser” and promptly pulled from its roster.
According to the private religious institution, Danielle knew what she was doing when she violated the student handbook that states: “Any student involved in sexually immoral behavior, including premarital sex, adultery, and homosexual acts, is at minimum placed on University probation and may be subject to a Judiciary Hearing.”
Danielle maintains that she didn’t realize she was a lesbian in 2011, when she enrolled. She wasn’t even out to her parents yet.
In the beginning, when the school found out, they put her in a “restoration” program that included regular church attendance and “spiritual counseling.” When their program failed to make her straight, they gave her the now-infamous boot.
To add insult to ignorance, the university is withholding her credits until she pays $6,300 — the scholarship money she earned for her final semester — to have them transferred to another school.
A petition has been started by Powell’s wife that urges the school to forgive her scholarship debt. It actually makes perfect sense for them to, since they kicked her out of the very semester they’re demanding money for.
